Woke up to a White-Out this morning. Rufus and Bailey stuck their heads out the door and decided to wait for spring. Riley pushed the Big Dogs out of his way and was ready to shovel snow and play. No matter how old he gets he will always play in the snow!
While we were out front a little boy walked past the house. Riley went over to say hello, but the little boy was terrified of dogs and froze. He threw his hands up in the air and was just about to scream when I told him that Riley would not leave the yard. I wish I would have taken a moment to tell him that the worst thing you can do when you are scared of a dog is freeze, raise your hands, or scream. When you raise your hands dogs think you want them to jump up (FYI to Uncle Eddie too!). When you scream you scare them. Even if you are terrified you need to act calm.
If a dog is charging at you, you can try saying “No” very firmly, but the best trick is to Yawn. Dogs recognize a person yawning as a non-threat. Obviously this doesn’t work with every dog, but I have found that when dealing with a dog charging you if you stand still and keep yawning the dog will stand down. If the dog continues to come at you try to stay upright and protect your face. You can’t avoid every dog attack, but yawning is a great defense!
I have been craving Italian so I put a pot of sauce on this morning. It has simmered all day and tonight the Four Legged are making Lasagna with broccoli & mushrooms. The freezer genie blessed us with all of the needed ingredients. When does that happen?
