Riley’s Favorite Day has arrived! Happy Halloween! Riley was out of bed at 6am ready to kick-off Halloween festivities! Even Rufus who never gets out of bed before 10am knew something was up and decided he better get out of bed too! After several cups of coffee and a crazy adventure regarding a dog down the street we are ready for fun!
Riley’s first point of business—make the treat bags for the Trick or Treaters. We only see about 10 kids, but it will be the highlight to his day. This year Riley is passing out Full Size Kit Kats or Reese’s cups with a packet of Fun Dip. We live off of a BIG hill and very few houses pass out treats on our cul de sac so Riley likes to give out two treats to the kids cool enough to climb the hill! If you tell him how awesome he is he has been known to give 3 or 4 pieces. You have to keep an eye on the candy bucket because he will treat himself to a piece!
Riley was rescued the week before Halloween 10 years ago and his first positive memories were sitting outside of Grammie’s house under the bushes passing out Halloween Candy. My mom gets about 100 kids so he spent a solid two hours passing out candy that first year. It was about 35 degrees and he refused to come in the house. Riley loves people!
Now that we are ready for the Trick or Treaters we need to carve some pumpkins. I don’t have the skills to carve using a knife so I take metal cookie cutters and pound them into the pumpkin using a hammer to pop out the shape. I buy metal cookie cutters at yard sales specifically for our pumpkin carving adventures because once you pound it into the pumpkin 3 or 4 times it is no longer usable. After using the cookie cutters I take a drill and add additional holes along the pumpkin lines or bottom so that the pumpkin lights up once we add the candles. Riley will be quite proud of his pumpkin and will share photos later.
My favorite part of the day—the pumpkin seeds! I just cut the pumpkins open and have the seeds roasting in the oven. We are a salty seed house. I tried the cinnamon sugar blend on the seeds a few years ago and it was lackluster. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it!
Rufus and Bailey have no idea what is going on today, but they can tell the vibe of the house is exciting and they are getting pumped up! Rufus is “carving” his toy pumpkin as we speak! I still need to cut the grass, walk the four legged, and get dinner ideas ready. We will eat early tonight as Riley will want to be out front promptly at 5:50pm waiting for the first Trick or Treaters! Happy Halloween From the Four Legged!
